Among the ancient Essenes it was said that words were the first thing created by God and that they were still the most beautiful of the creations. In addition to being an artist, I have been, for all my life, a writer. The letters themselves captivate me. Hence my forays into Text Art.
The Wordscapes are feeling interpretations, in color and design, line and letter of very short stories or concepts.
In my art I use words as the divine playthings that they are, creating works of tone – both feeling and color – and energy. In my Wordscapes, I use my own font, which I call Pendragon Dyslexic Bold.
The piece above, (16×20″), is called Walkabout. It ‘starts’ in the upper left hand corner. See if you can read it! (The wording is at the bottom of this page, should you grow frustrated!)
The point of a Wordscape is to engage, occupy, delight and mystify the viewer, not necessarily in that order. Although many Wordscapes are playful, others are thought provoking and all require a certain amount of a willingness on the part of the observer to enter into the game and think creatively.
I call the font I have created, Pendragon Dyslexic Bold© for reasons that are more obvious in some works than in others as type may appear upside-down or reversed but the flow is always discernable.
In 2016 I also began creating mixed media pieces that incorporated poems or poem-like fragments that I created.
